Nature Friendly Mower

Tuesday, October 11th, 2011

As someone who has a love for animals and nature, I am always trying to find new ways to encourage wildlife to my garden. I already have one natural pond, one koi pond and a section left overgrown for animals and insects to live in. I recently had to replace my lawn mower so I did some research on what would be the kindest mower for the animals in my garden. Apparently the mulching lawn mowers come out on top.

So off I went to B & Q to find a mulcher mower and ask the staff what exactly I should do with the mulch in my garden. I also had to find out if there would be any grass cuttings littering my lawn afterwards. The last thing I needed was for that to go into the pond and foul the water. I picked up a Black & Decker mulcher mower and took it home to show the wife.

Finding Leaf Blower Ratings on All the Best Leaf Blowers

Tuesday, October 11th, 2011

Today there are a large amount of Leaf Blowers to choose from on the market, and for those of us with little to no mechanical ability or knowledge, the only way to determine which of these are the best products is to read Leaf Blower Ratings on all the various products. Read on to find out more information on how to find ratings and reviews for many different types of Leaf Blowers.

Product reviews and ratings are not all that difficult to find, however finding unbiased reviews can be a different story entirely. When purchasing a product, many consumers typically do not bother to take the time to write a review if the product is performing as desired, however if the product has a fault or malfunction then consumers tend to feel they have been ripped off and will leave negative reviews on a product. There are a couple places to look that can help avoid biased reviews and we will discuss those here.

First, the best place to look is where the most people would buy Leaf Blowers, and in this day and age most people do their shopping online. Amazon is without argument the largest online retailer in the world, and they are absolutely loaded with reviews and ratings. In the case of Leaf Blowers, simply do a search on Amazon for leaf blowers or any particular model you may have in mind and there is a good chance there will be several reviews for that product. Anytime you find Leaf Blower Ratings in the 4 to 5 star range then you can safely assume it is a good product.

If you would rather not take the time to read through perhaps hundreds of reviews, then you can always resort to a Leaf Blower Ratings site. These types of sites will read all of the Amazon reviews and then summarize them stating the pros and cons of each product. This is an excellent time save and should strongly be considered when searching for reviews or ratings.

Changing the Way We View the Yard

Friday, September 23rd, 2011

Outdoor living is on a popularity train nowadays, with everybody trying to move out of their houses and establishing permanent residence on the backyard. Passing by your neighbor and getting the drift of tasty cookery from the air within should not mislead you to thinking of the common barbecue grills but open your mind to a whole kitchen full of appliances lying on the lawn. The idea is not to show how much of an optimist you are but it could well be that you like doing things your way rather than working with unsatisfactory commercial purchases. If your indoor kitchen does not offer you the thrill you seek then why not free yourself by investing in the dream you want. Having a kitchen next to the pool, interacting with the guests while busy on the kitchen counter with more space to spare and watching the sun set as you dine on the patio could be what excites you and look forward to another day.

The Autumn Blaze Maple Adds Color and Shade

Tuesday, December 21st, 2010

For a beautiful shade tree that adds color as well there are a number of blossoming varieties. But the autumn blaze maple adds the color as the foliage itself changes to a brilliant red orange shade. It is a fast growing tree so you won’t have to wait long for it to provide shade. A mature tree can reach fifty or sixty feet tall with an expanse of thirty to forty feet. This variety is one of the most beautiful healthy trees you can add to your landscape. They do well in a wide range of climates from the frigid cold of zone three to the warmer southern zones. This is a superior tree that is virtually maintenance free. In the summer the tree sports leaves of a rich green that gradually change in the fall to the beautiful red tones. Planting near your home can reduce heating and cooling costs a great deal by shielding your home from the elements.

Saving Tomato Seeds for Planting

Sunday, December 12th, 2010

Have you encountered that perfect and delicious tomato that you have bought from the supermarket or from the Farmer’s market? You want to have it grown into your garden but you are completely unaware on how to do that. They say that one of the best tomatoes in the world is home grown, and you could easily do that if you know how to save tomato seeds for planting. Choose a tomato whose taste is something you like and prefer, then cut it in the middle. Scoop the seeds out and put it in a container, add couple tablespoons of water on the seeds. Cover the container wit a plastic wrap. But make sure to poke some holes on the plastic cover to ensure that air would be able to get into the container. Place it on a sunny area for fermentation for two to three days. Make sure to replace the plastic cover every night. After three days, wash the seeds wit water to remove the “goo” which used to be attached to the seeds. Make sure that the seeds are washed several times to make it clean. Put it on a plate and let them dry. It could take several days but it is important that the seeds are completely dry before storage to avoid any rotting and mildew.

A Bit About My Dream Garden Space

Tuesday, November 9th, 2010

I live in small town called Chalakudy in state of Kerala, India. Our economy is mostly agricultural sector and so 99% family do possess a garden closeby their agriculture area. Our home is situated in 12 acres of land. I have created a small garden in front of our house, with soil mainly being laterite. Laterite soil is good for tea, coffee, cashewnuts and coconuts. For more delicate produce, I use a gazebo to protect them from the elements.

I have maintained his garden for past 18 years. Before creating the garden I did a research on the features of the soil and the plants which are most likely to thrive on it. I decided to choose on plants which I felt would overcome the climatic and environmental hazards. In the southern part of India, we do receive considerable amounts of rain almost six months a year. So the climate usually is a humid one. I have planted various ornamental and medicinal plants in my garden.

For ornamental flowers, I selected various colours of hibiscus, Jungle Flame (Ixora coccinea), Golden Trumpet (Allamanda cathartica),lotus, hycinthea, roses, jasmine and for medicinal use, I decided to plant Tulsi or the Holy Basil, Feverfew (Chrysanthemum parthenium), Indian Psyllium (Plantago ovata), Evening Primrose (Oenothera biennis),etc.

I have also created a small fish pond in middle of my garden and I have put some little fishes in it.During my leisure hours I spent my time in garden. It gives calm and peace to my mind. Also many little birds have started to make their nests on the tree branches which is yet another beautiful sight to see. I also spray pesticides at regulay intervals, if the plants shows any kind of growth retardations, I immediately supply the concerned fertilizer afer discussing with our local village agricultural officer. In my opinion I would say that gardening in one of the best leisure time activity.

Termite Baiting Stations

Tuesday, October 12th, 2010

Termite control is essential in some places where termites are abundant, especially in tropical countries. The concept of using termite bait stations is quite recent, having begun less than 2 decades ago, but has proven successful in controlling termite infestations in homes.

Usually, the termites that cause problems are the subterranean varieties. And it so happens that we now have a system that is effective in controlling subterranean termites. By installing many termite bait stations around a house, the homeowner is creating a virtual “wall” of protection that can provide solid protection against marauding parties of foraging termites.

These stations are installed in the ground in a circular pattern around a home, and termites are lured to eat the bait inside them, which is poisoned. When they eat it, they also spread it by feeding each other, and that is how the poison gets to eliminate the entire colony. These termite bait stations have indeed reduced the number of termite damage cases in recent years.
